How Burnout is Stealing Your Joy (And What to do About It!)

Burnout is not just about feeling tired. It is a full-body experience that affects your emotions, physical health and even your spiritual life. For Christian women, it can be especially hard to admit when we are running on empty. We are often used to giving, serving and keeping it all together- but what happens when there is just nothing left to give?

I want to share with you about burnout– what is looks like and how it affects your body and mind– and how to break the cycle.

WHAT IS BURNOUT?

Burnout is MORE than physical exhaustion. It is the result of chronic stress that leaves you feeling drained, emotionally numb and disconnected. You feel that disconnect from yourself, others and even God.

If you are feeling any of these, you could be heading for burnout:

Emotional triggers, like irritability, overwhelm and lack of focus.

Physical signs, such as persistent fatigue, tension headaches or body aches that don’t go away.

Spiritual signs, like feeling distanced from God, struggling to pray or finding it difficult to engage in your faith.

HOW BURNOUT AFFECTS YOUR BODY (SOMATICS)

Burnout is not just mental or emotional but is shows up physically as well. When we push ourselves beyond our limits, stress is stored in our muscles, our gut, and our nervous system. That is why you might feel tense, have headaches or deal with digestive issues when you are burned out.

But, the great news is that God designed out bodies to heal and there are ways to start reversing the effects of burnout by listening to what your body needs.

STEPS TO HEAL:

  1. Recognize the Signs: Awareness is the first step. Acknowledge when you are pushing yourself too hard.
  2. Prioritize REST: Rest is a command from God, not a suggestion. Take time for yourself, even if it is just a few minutes a day to recharge.
  3. Lean into Faith: Burnout can make it feel hard to connect with God, but it is important to remember that He is with you in this season. Take moments to pray, meditate on scripture, and ask for His strength. Even if you don’t know what else to do, listen for Him in those quiet spaces.
