Let’s first talk about the 3 C’s of Goal Setting…
Setting goals may seem like something you only do at the beginning of the year, but it’s important to set and revisit your goals regularly. When we look at our goals through the lens of the 3 C’s, we can create realistic goals that are achievable and purpose-driven!
Clarity:
Clarity starts with honesty. Yep, get honest with yourself! When you are able to gain clarity around what drives you and where attitudes, beliefs, and desires come from, we can create goals that can work!
Choices:
Once you have clarity in your values and principals, we can make better choices. I mean, as a busy mom, I know it is hard for me to balance alllll the things as there are always so many demands on our time, attention and resources. BUT, when we have an understanding of the foundation, it helps guide us in the decision making process. You can better prioritize and even delegate when you have a better understanding of the choices you can make.
Commitment:
Schedule your priorities! Making choices and committing to them is so very important! And even more important because you need to be able to say NO. You will say YES to anything that aligns with your goal but will have to say no to what is not aligned. That means some people might not be happy about your choice! As a people pleaser, I GET it… But the peace you have when you stay focused is an even better feeling.
The second part of commitment is that you NEED to stick to it. Whether others are giving us grief from our decisions, or we are preferring to do something else, we need to remain true to our commitment. We need to be able to fall back on our Clarity, which is our compass! It is our WHY we are needing to stay committed!
Now, the method for success includes taking the 3 C’s and creating SMART goals, which is a proven method for success.
Smart goals include:
1. Establish your focus. Be clear on where you need to begin.
2. Explore the possibilities. Decide on what your action steps need to be to achieve these goals.
3. Plan your action steps. Break it down!
4. Explore barriers. What are your obstacles and plan ahead to see how you can remove or minimize any barriers.
5. Review. Can you delegate any of these steps to someone else? Make notes.
6. Reasons. Make a list of the reasons why! And create reasons for success, like noting what it will feel like, the benefits of achieving your goal, what can you reward yourself with, etc. Create affirmations and motivational statements to keep you going!
7. Describe the status quo in your life. This statement is a reminder of what life is CURRENTLY like and a reminder as to WHY you want things to shift! It can keep you focused on your goals.
