Let’s Talk About Digestion… and the Emotions that Relate!
When we experience a lot of negativity and rejection without release, the digestive system will “hold” these experiences. When you are holding onto such experiences, it creates dysregulation in the gut and alters the gut microbiome, creating digestive issues.
Let’s talk about a few areas that are directly impacted.
1 | Esophagus. This area reflects how we “swallow” harmful emotional experiences, particularly in toxic relationships, oppressive environments, or situations in which we feel that we must internalize negativity instead of expressing it. The symptoms show up as dysphagia, heartburn, and throat tightness.
2 | Stomach. This organ is closely related to control, perfectionism, and judgement. Those who experience trauma or stress will feel it most often in the form of ulcers, indigestion, or nausea. When emotions like guilt, shame or repressed anger are combined with a need to maintain high standards or a fear of failure, it will create disruptions in the stomach’s ability to properly digest.
3 | Small Intestine. The job of the small intestine is working with “discernment” and the ability to absorb what we need from life while letting go of what no longer serves us. If we are lacking positive validation and nurturing from our parents, and instead experience abuse without co-regulation, it will show up as digestive issues around IBS and food intolerances.
4. Large Intestine. This area is where the final stages of digestion occur- the release and letting go. This organ is most closely associated with ancestral trauma as it deals with deep rooted patterns and unresolved emotions that are often passed down through generations. The symptoms show up as IBD, Crohn’s disease and colitis.
